As reported on our live news feed on September 29, 2002 by the Spokane Washington News, Ford has promised the government and all federal, state, and local police departments to place a metal plate between the passenger compartment and the fuel tank on all Crown Vics in use by police. This promise does not include "civilian" non-police owned vehicles. Crown Vics are owned by 80% of all U.S. police departments and the repairs are expected to cost Ford about fifty-million dollars.
As many of you might remember, Classic Mustang Analyzer News reported on this problem as it related to classic 1964-1966 Mustangs several years ago. In case you are not aware, and if you drive one of these classics, then a retro repair of a steel or aluminum plate between the passenger compartment and gas tank is highly recommended. This will keep the gas from splashing into the passenger compartment in case of a rear end collision. Simply remove the cardboard sound absorber behind the rear seat and use it as a template for the metal piece. Look for a machine or welding shop in your area and ask if they will do the work for you. Most shops will cut and debur the edges for you for around $100-$150 plus the cost of the metal plate. If you choose the aluminum, make sure it's thick enough to be effective, probably around 1/4", with the steel at lease 1/8". Sheet metal thicker than this is also available, say 3/8" if you are very concerned, but 1/2" is probably overkill.
